He does not have much protein in his diet and mostly eats crackers and soup. The family traveled 6 hours by foot to arrive at the clinic.

He began getting sick when his mom stopped breastfeeding him. He did not get enough good food to help him grow. They traveled by taxi and motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.
Thamarre was brought to the clinic by her 2nd cousin. Her mother died when she was 2 months old and she has been living with her dad since then. Her dad is married and has 5 other children. No one wants to take care of Thamarre. She has been sick and malnourished most of her life. Her weight for height is 4 standard deviations below the average for Haitian children. This past month she has had a cold and cough and is starting to lose some of her hair. Her aunt brought her to the clinic because she was beginning to has some edema (swelling) in her feet due to her malnutrition. This is the second time in her short life she has had kwashiorkor. The aunt traveled 1 hour by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.
This is Medjina’s second time with us in the Rescue Center. Her parents really love her and want her to be healthy. It has been several years since she was last here. She had been doing well and then got sick. She began to lose weight and then refused to eat anything. Her weight for height is 4 standard deviations below the average for Haitian children. When she first arrived, she was treated for infection and had a NG tube placed so that we got her some good nutrition into her. She has one living brother and a set of twins that died when they were 3 days old. The family lives in a 3-room home made of tin and sticks. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have an outhouse. They purchase their water from a vendor near there home.
