Villagers View~Bethel

I wa born in 1934 and am 87 years old. I had 2 children during my life. One died and the other is unable to care for herself. She lives with me and I care for her. I am really to old to do much now. I wash our clothing and cook for us. I have lived in the town of Bethel my whole life. I was born there. Most of my family is dead. My mother ,father, siblings and husband have all gone before me. A few years ago there was a flood in my village, it took my house, my yard and garden away. Since that time I have lived in a room with my daughter. Some people with good heart gave me the room to live in. They said I could stay until I die. I have good neighbors that look after me and help me. I am thankful for them. The village I live in has 4 schools, 3 churches, and 3 vodou temples. The biggest problem is out area is water. We have to buy water to drink because the river water is not clean. There are no springs near us to get water from.

One story that I will never forget is during the time Duvalier was president they had a group of people that worked for them. These people used to walk around and get anyone that talked bad about Duvalier. If they caught you they killed you or took you and then your family never saw you again. I remember that was a scary time for everyone.
