UPDATE: So far $2773.58 has been given for this need we are still in need of $1026.45 to reach out goal of $3800.00
Gladimyr was in our Rescue Center in 2017. He was admitted for severe malnutrition and kwashiorkor. He recovered and returned home. After returning home, he came to the clinic each month for check-ups and to receive a food box. He remained well during this time, but in 2019 he began to have issues with his legs. One of his legs had a knocked knee that needed to have surgery. In July of 2019, surgery was done and metal clips were put into his bones to correct the leg. He had several follow up appointments over the next few months and everything was going well. Then, Haiti got bad with gangs and protest. We tried several times to get him to the hospital for follow-up only to be blocked on the way into town. The family became scared and did not want to travel for fear of their lives. They stopped coming to the clinic and we lost contact with them.
Fast forward to 2022. While cleaning out some old papers, we found his paper work from the surgery and began the search to find him and his family. It took some time, but we located them in a different village. They had moved so their children could be closer to school.
His leg is now deformed more and he needs surgery to remove the clips in his leg. He will also need more surgery in the future. Right now, it is affecting the growth and length of his leg. We were able to contact a hospital on our side of the island that is willing to do the surgery for him. This means he will not have to travel to Port au Prince to get the surgery done. We are so thankful that we were able to find a doctor closer to us that can do the surgery! His family is very thankful that they do not need to go into town. Here is a break down of what is needed for his surgery:
$3000-doctor fees and hospital stay
$300-medications and other supplies for surgery
$200-food and transportation
$300-follow up and extra unforeseen cost
total cost is $3800
We know this is a big ask for this little boy and is not an emergency surgery, but it is one that is will affect his life long term.
