Jean Jacques Dessalines, who is one of the great leaders, tore the French flag that had 3 folds. Catherine Flon took 2 pieces of it, blue and red, stitched it together and today the flag we have is arranged in two horizontal bands that symbolize “L’union des Noirs et des Mulatres”. The blue symbolizes Haiti’s black citizens, while the red represents mulattoes and mixed-race Haitians. The two bands are arranged horizontally to represent unity. The flag has undergone some changes over the years, including the addition of the country’s coat of arms in 1986.The National unit was adopted in 1820 and became official in 1843.
