My name is Merena, and I used to live with my mother and six sisters in Lalane, about a half-hour walk from the clinic. When I was eighteen, I fell in love with a twenty-year-old man, a relationship my mother disapproved of. One day, she caught us talking and punished me in front of him. Fearing more mistreatment at home, I decided to sleep on the streets, but my boyfriend took me in for the night. I’ve been staying with him ever since.
In April, I missed my period after having it in early March. I felt unwell, with nausea and food aversions. Suspecting I was pregnant, I took a test and confirmed my fears. I shared the news with my partner, who supported me, along with my father, ensuring my health and well-being during this delicate time.
From the third month of my pregnancy, I had regular check-ups at the clinic. I received treatments and advice on nutrition and care to ensure my baby’s well-being. Despite anemia and persistent dizziness, my pregnancy went smoothly.
The long-awaited day finally arrived. On December 2, 2023, the first sensations of labor began. Hoping to give birth at home, I prayed to God for everything to go well. On December 3, two midwives came to assist me in this important event. Midwives, those individuals who, by tradition or family inheritance, have acquired the experience needed to assist during childbirth. Despite intense abdominal pains accompanied by backaches, childbirth could not occur that day. And on December 4, I am still waiting for that long-awaited moment.
On December 5, I asked my parents, who were present, to take me to the clinic. Despite the midwives’ reluctance, I told my mother that if she didn’t take me, I might lose the baby and my life. My parents immediately responded and took me to the clinic, about an hour’s walk away.
At the clinic, healthcare professionals quickly decided to transfer me to another hospital for a safe delivery. Thanks to the financial help from mission staff, a car was rented to take me to Harmony Hospital in Cabaret, about an hour’s drive away. The mission covered the childbirth expenses also.
At the hospital, doctors performed an episiotomy, facilitating a rapid birth. Although my childbirth didn’t go as planned, everything went well, thanks to divine grace.
Since giving birth, I’ve felt a profound transformation into a true mother. At nineteen, I am fulfilled as the mother of Nadègeca, a beautiful girl. My love for her is immense. I am proud of my role as a mother and I am ready to make any sacrifice for her well-being. Each day, my love for her grows stronger.
I am extremely grateful to the RHFH staff who supported me throughout my pregnancy and childbirth. Thanks to the emergency fund, I was able to give birth calmly, without financial worries. I am infinitely grateful for your assistance and give thanks to God for placing RHFH on my path during these difficult times. May God bless you abundantly.
