Words from Gretchen-June 2, 1994

This is a letter mom wrote to us kids in June 1994. They had to send casey back to the USA for the summer due to the issues in Haiti.

June 2, 1994
Dear Lori, Licia, and Casey,

Guess where I am? I’m at the beach! It’s a small place, but very nice and beautiful. There’s hardly anyone here but us. I can see lots of tiny sailboats far off in every direction. I have so much to do, but the nurses from the mountains wanted to come one last time before they leave, and they pleaded with us to join them.

Speaking of boats, the mission purchased a small motorboat this week. A missionary who left sold it to us. So, if we ever have to run for our lives, I guess we’ll be heading towards the ocean! Can you imagine? Four blancs on a boat. Dad can’t swim, and the sun would cook us alive. We might end up in the belly of a whale (there’s hope in that). I’m praying we don’t have to take that route.

They just brought us two big plates of French fries. Casey, do you miss us? I really miss you. How are you all getting along in the camper? Cedres is scheduled to step down soon, and the Senate is set to meet to impeach Aristide. They have proof he’s stolen millions, and they hope to hold a new election soon after. We’ll just have to wait and see.

We finished eating, and I went for a walk on the beach. I picked up several shells to add to the shelf in the bathroom. I want you all to take some money from savings and go shopping for clothes during the sale. Get a few outfits for each of you. I hope you all have a good summer together. Try to get along, enjoy each other, and show love. Also, try to visit people as well.

The last person we know is leaving this week, so this will be the last letter you get from us for a while. Try to write us when you can so I can get an update when the mail comes in.

We love you all and appreciate the sacrifices you’re making for the gospel of Christ. I know God will bless each of you.

Beautiful! Brought out the emotions. Love that there is hope in being swallowed by a whale
