Pictures from the USN (Nutritional Stabilization Unit)

The past few months, we’ve been focused on caring for children suffering from severe malnutrition. Over the years, we’ve seen a significant decrease in the number of children admitted with kwashiorkor—a life-threatening form of malnutrition caused by prolonged protein deficiency. This condition leads to swelling (edema), skin problems, stunted growth, weakened immunity, and other critical complications. At times, we’ve only treated a few cases of kwashiorkor each month.

However, in the last two months, the number of children needing inpatient care for this severe condition has risen dramatically. Each episode of kwashiorkor weakens a child’s body further, reducing their chances of survival with every recurrence. This increase reflects the struggles so many families in Haiti are facing today. Ongoing insecurity, gang violence, displacement, and immense stress are taking a toll, with children often suffering the most.

It’s heartbreaking, but it’s also an honor to step in and provide care. Saving children from this devastating disease and giving them a chance to recover is why we do what we do. Thank you to everyone who supports this work and helps us fight malnutrition in Haiti. Together, we can continue to make a difference.
