Throwback Thursday: Saintana’s Journey from Crisis to Hope

When Saintana was born, her mother faced an unbearable fear—another child slipping away. She had already lost four children, and now her newborn daughter had a life-threatening condition: an imperforate anus. Without quick surgery, survival would be difficult. But in a place where specialized medical care was scarce, hope seemed distant.

Through the dedication of RHFH and a network of compassionate supporters, Saintana was given a chance. She received a medical visa and traveled to the United States, where surgeons performed the procedure that would save her life. Though she was too young to remember, the love and care shown to her during that time shaped the course of her future.

Now, a teenager and full of life, Saintana is thriving. Apart from the usual childhood illnesses—occasional fevers and colds—she has grown up strong and healthy. She continues her education and will enter 7th grade next year. But what makes her story even more remarkable is her dream: she wants to become a nurse.

“I want to care for others the way people cared for me,” she says with gratitude.

Her mother often shows her photos from that critical time, reminding her of the many people who made her healing possible—the ones who handled paperwork, arranged travel, provided housing, surgery, medical care, food, and prayers. Though Saintana doesn’t remember the details, she carries a deep appreciation for the kindness that saved her life.

“I thank God for the mission in Haiti and the many people in the US that gave me this chance,” she says. “Without them, I wouldn’t be here, and my mother would have lost another child.”

Today, Saintana’s life is a testament to the power of compassion, and her story is one of hope. Because of the generosity of others, she was given the gift of life—and now she dreams of paying it forward.
