Clinic Story-Patrick

Patrick is a 13-year-old who lives with his mother and siblings. Since early childhood, he has struggled with asthma—a chronic respiratory condition that made everyday activities difficult. Simple things like running, playing, or walking long distances would leave him short of breath and wheezing. These frequent episodes impacted his physical comfort and his ability to enjoy a typical childhood.

At age eight, his parents brought him to our clinic for a full medical evaluation. Patrick showed signs of poorly controlled asthma: frequent coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing after minor effort. After assessment, we diagnosed him with persistent asthma.

We spoke with Patrick and his mother about how to manage his condition. This included identifying common asthma triggers like dust and other factors in his home, understanding the importance of early symptom recognition, and using medication effectively. We gave medictions, to help open his airways during flare-ups, and scheduled monthly follow-ups to monitor his progress.

Patrick has now been coming to the clinic for six years. With consistent care and access to medication—made possible through donor support—his condition has greatly improved. He rarely has asthma attacks, and he is now able to do many of the activities that used to be difficult.

He goes to school regularly, plays with his friends, and lives a more active life. His mother often shares how thankful she is to see these changes, saying, “My son has regained his freedom.”

Patrick’s story highlights the importance of early diagnosis, proper medication, and routine follow-up in managing chronic conditions like asthma. It also shows how valuable community support is in helping children lead healthier lives.
