Healing Through Nature: Traditional Plant Remedies in Haiti

In Haiti, the healing power of plants is woven into everyday life. For generations, families have relied on natural remedies not only to treat infections, bloating, and diarrhea but also as a form of preventive care for digestive issues and emotional well-being.

In times of emotional distress—such as after a car accident, the sudden loss of a loved one, or heartbreaking news—Haitians often turn to time-honored herbal remedies to soothe the soul. One of the most well-known traditional treatments is “bitter coffee,” a comforting blend believed to help ease trauma and support mental health.

How to Make Haitian Bitter Coffee

This herbal coffee is more than a warm drink—it’s a remedy passed down through generations.

Ingredients:

  • Freshly brewed unsweetened coffee
  • Grated ginger
  • Rosemary leaves
  • Orange leaves
  • 2–3 leaves each of:
    • Soursop (graviola)
    • Rhoeo spathacea
    • Borage
    • Samady Rosea Sims

Instructions:

  1. Brew a regular cup of unsweetened coffee.
  2. Stir in the grated ginger, rosemary, and orange leaves.
  3. Add the other medicinal leaves to the mixture.
  4. Return everything to the stove and let it boil for 5–10 minutes.
  5. Sip slowly and let the warmth calm both body and mind.

This blend can be refrigerated and enjoyed for up to a week. If you don’t drink coffee, you can still boil the leaves alone and drink the infusion as tea.

Bonus Remedy: Papaya Leaf Bath for Fatigue

Feeling drained or battling a fever? In Haitian households, papaya leaves are often infused in hot bathwater to combat physical exhaustion. While bathing, gently press the softened leaves against your skin to release their healing properties. Many find quick relief with this simple yet powerful remedy.
