From Lab Results to Lifesaving Care: Philomène and Baby Love Maïda’s Journey

In late May 2025, Philomène, a 28‑year‑old mother from the Cabaret neighborhood, arrived at our clinic weak, pale, and in pain. What she thought was “just a simple sickness” turned out to be a life‑threatening anemia. Thanks to our laboratory you help support, we ran urgent tests that revealed dangerously low hemoglobin levels (hemoglobin of 3.6 g/dL when 12-18 is normal) —and the clock was ticking.

A Lifesaving Transfusion

Understanding the gravity of her condition, our team kept Philomène overnight and accompanied her early the next morning to Saint Camille Hospital to arrange and pay for her care. There, despite severe shortages in the national blood supply, she received two precious units of blood. Philomène later told us, “I thought I was going to die, but after the transfusion I felt like a new person. Now my daughter and I are alive and well.”

Welcoming Baby Love Maïda

Just days after her transfusion, on June 2, Philomène gave birth to her daughter, Love Maïda. Weighing barely three pounds at birth, the little one spent 22 days in an incubator fighting to grow stronger. When Love Maïda first returned to our clinic on June 24, she weighed only 4 pounds. Today—just under a month later—she’s up to 6 1/2 pounds, sleeping peacefully in her mother’s arms as both continue to recover under our care.
