Clinic story-Ak-1000 and Medika Mamba

At our clinic, our work goes beyond handing out medication. It is a mission rooted in education, encouragement, and whole-child care. Every time a child receives AK-1000 flour, the nurse overseeing the program takes time to walk parents through exactly how to prepare it — the correct quantity, the right consistency, and how often their child should consume it. We believe that empowering parents is just as important as treating the child.

During follow-up appointments, we see a range of outcomes. Many children show steady, encouraging weight gain. Others, however, arrive at their next visit with little progress — and when we ask, parents often tell us their child refused the flour because of the taste. In those moments, we don’t give up. We sit with the family, re-educate, and encourage. We remind them why this flour matters. And when parents follow through, the results speak for themselves — gradual, consistent weight gain, month after month.

AK-1000 flour is a powerful nutritional tool because it addresses three critical needs at once. It contains nutrients that build the body, nutrients that provide strength and energy, and nutrients that protect against illness. For young children battling malnutrition, this combination is essential.

For children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition, once they reach the appropriate age and weight threshold, we transition them into the Medika Mamba program. This program includes weekly follow-up appointments to monitor weight, assess feeding practices, and reinforce parental education, as well as monthly visits to evaluate overall progress and adjust care as needed. The goal is not just short-term recovery — it is sustainable, lasting health.

The results we see in the Medika Mamba program are nothing short of remarkable. Children who arrived at our clinic unable to walk — their little bodies too weak to support them — have gained enough weight within one or two months to take their first steps. Parents come to their follow-up appointments with tears in their eyes, sharing how their child has been transformed. These are not small victories. They are life-changing moments that happen because families followed the guidance of our nurses faithfully and consistently.

The impact of the AK-1000 and Medika Mamba programs is clear in every weight chart, every testimony, and every child who walks out of our clinic stronger than when they arrived. Behind each of those success stories is a dedicated nurse who showed up, explained, encouraged, and refused to give up. That is the heart of what we do at Real Hope for Haiti — and it is making all the difference.
