My name is Tamara, and I am a nurse at Real Hope for Haiti. Today, I want to share the story of a patient named Andersley—a story that has deeply impacted me, both personally and professionally as a nurse.

Andersley is a 12-year-old boy from the community of Délices, located approximately six hours from our clinic. In December 2025, he arrived at Real Hope for Haiti in critical condition following a serious accident.

Andersley had been picking guavas for his aunt to sell. As he climbed down from a large rock, his heel struck a sharp piece of stone. The injury was devastating. His heel appeared to be nearly torn off, and by the time he arrived at our clinic, he had lost consciousness because of the significant amount of blood he had lost.

We immediately began emergency treatment, including intravenous fluids, and gradually, Andersley regained consciousness. Cleaning the wound was an incredibly difficult and time-consuming process. It took nearly an hour just to remove the small pieces of rock and debris embedded in the wound. We could not close the wound until every fragment had been carefully removed.

I remember looking at his injury and wondering whether we would be able to save his foot. The damage was so severe that the outcome was uncertain. But our team never gave up.

We continued cleaning the wound, administering medications, changing dressings, and providing constant care. After approximately five to six hours of dedicated work, we were finally able to close the wound with sutures.

Even after the initial treatment, Andersley experienced significant pain and faced a long road to recovery. He was admitted to the clinic so that our team could continue providing daily care. At times, some of the stitches came loose, and portions of the wound became infected. There were moments when I wondered whether his foot would ever fully heal.

But we continued.

Through patience, determination, teamwork, and ongoing wound care, we moved forward one day at a time.

Week after week, we saw steady improvement. After seven months of continuous treatment and care, Andersley’s foot had completely healed.

Today, Andersley walks normally. He wears socks and sneakers like any other child and is able to enjoy life again. For me, his recovery remains one of the greatest successes I have experienced as a nurse.

His story reminds me that with faith in God, medical knowledge, teamwork, perseverance, and compassionate care, even the most difficult cases can have remarkable outcomes.

Andersley often says that it was through God’s grace and the dedicated care of the Real Hope for Haiti team that he did not lose his foot. His words continue to inspire me to serve every patient with compassion, hope, and unwavering commitment.

Andersley’s journey is a reminder that healing can take time, but with determination and care, even seemingly hopeless situations can end in hope.
