Education Story-How we do job shadowing

Investing in Haiti’s Next Generation of Healthcare Professionals

Every summer during the months of July and August, many high school students in Haiti look for opportunities to gain practical experience and begin thinking about their future careers. At our clinic, we offer a special internship program for students who are interested in healthcare but may not yet know which path they want to pursue.

The internship gives students a chance to experience what it is really like to work in a healthcare setting. They rotate through several areas of our clinic, including the pharmacy, laboratory, emergency department, pediatrics, general consultation, and prenatal care. In each department, members of our team guide the students, answer their questions, and help them understand the responsibilities of different healthcare professionals.

For some students, the experience confirms a dream they already have. For others, it helps them discover that healthcare may not be the right career for them. A student who hopes to become a nurse, for example, may discover that they are uncomfortable seeing blood or caring for wounds. While that may be disappointing, it is also valuable. Learning this before spending years and significant financial resources pursuing a career can help a young person make a better decision about their future.

Other students arrive knowing they want to become nurses but have little understanding of what the profession actually involves. Through the internship, they begin to see the importance of caring for patients, communicating with families, working as part of a team, and handling the challenges that come with providing healthcare.

For some students, the internship becomes the beginning of a life-changing journey.

We are thankful that our work at RHFH allows us to invest not only in the health of the people we serve today, but also in the young people who will care for their communities tomorrow.

We are deeply grateful to our donors and partners whose generosity makes this possible. Your support helps provide healthcare in Haiti, but it also allows us to invest in education, encourage young people to pursue their calling, and help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.
