This past week we had a return visitor, Jacob, and his friend Kent. They are both firefighter from Texas. They had a busy week here at RHFH. They did shifts at the cholera house, worked in the clinic, played tag with the kids, cleaned and did many other things to help out. They were also able to visit a fire station in Port-au-Prince. Cool!
One of the main things they worked on this week was teaching fire safety in the local schools.

They also did another training for the ladies that work in the RC. We have fire extinguishers but no one knew how to use them. So they went up to a large flat piece of land and started a small fire.
And practiced putting it out…
The ladies really enjoyed this class and feel better prepared now if there was a fire. We really apprecaite Jacob and Kent and their willingness to come help us here at RHFH for a week. The staff and comminuty were sad to see them go. We hope they will come back and visit soon!

October 13, 2011 at 7:41 pmAs far as I know, the chemical agent in the fire extinguishers is Potassium Bi-Carbonate, or just fancy expensive baking soda. During my previous trip, I explained how they could use baking soda to extinguish small cooking fires.
