MARIE CARMENE
An aunt brought her down to the clinic. Her age unknown but I think she is just maybe a week old. She weighs 4 pounds 6 ounces. Her mother delivered her and lived for a few days before she died. She has other siblings at home. We have not been able to met the father or extended family. We met Marie Carmel late one evening. The aunt had stayed and attended the burial of the mother and then began traveling down to the clinic by foot. It took her most of the day to walk down the foot paths from the mountains. We hope to soon met her papa who is dealing with the loss of his wife.
ROSEMA
Rosema is 17 months old and weighs 12 pounds 13 ounces. She is unable to stand yet and was very weak and sick with a high fever when admitted. She is an only child. She is currenlt on the medika mamba program.
LOUIDIEURIE
This is Louidierie and his great-grandmother. Louisdierie mom has triplets and he was the only one that lived. She cared for him for a few months and then took off to the Dominican Republic to try and find work. She has not returned since and told her family she did not want her son. She took Louidieurie to her mom’s house (his grandma). Her mom tried to care for him but she become ill and then bed ridden. Louisdieurie was then taken in my his great grandma. She tells me she had nothing. Nothing at all to live on. She totally 100% depends on God and her church to care for her. She has been caring for her great grandson for about 1 year now. She has done her best but feels like he is falling behind and would benfit from staying at RHFH for awhile. He is 24 months old and weighs 17 pounds. She told me over and over again how God had taken care of her. When she has no food her church takes up a collection for her. I sit and try to imagine that. Have you ever visited a little church back in hills of Haiti. Way back, like where no vehicles can get to. Little churches that meet week after week in their many times stick structures. They come together and give. The poorest of the poor giving and giving to help this great grandma. Imagine it. Imagine sitting in the room with her telling the story from her point of view. Imagine her raising up her hands to heaven and thanking God for always providing for her. Makes my hard days seem pretty weak. We are honored to care for this little boy fro a few months.
JN ILER
He is 3 years old and weighs 19 pounds even with his “water weight” from the kwashiorkor. He has 1 siblings. He was living with his mother and her family. The mother said it is the dad’s fault because he did not give her money to feed Jn Iler. The mom told Jn Iler’s dad that she did not want him anymore. His dad went to the mom’s house and got him. He was, as you can see, very sick. He brought him here the next clinic week. He told us he does not have much hope tha the will live. This is his 2nd time with kwashiorkor. He is currently on the medika mamba program.
WISHNY
He is 3 years old and weighs 16 pounds. He had a mild case of kwashiorkor and has lost 2 pounds of “water weight” in the past week. Wishny has 3 living siblings and 2 that have died. He is currently on the medika mamba program.
ESTERLINE
Esterline’s mom died a few months ago. Since the birth of Esterline she has not been mentally stable. She was unable to care for her much. She is an only child. She began showing signs of mild kwashiorkor and her dad became very worried about her. She is currently on the medika mamba program.
SAINT VIQUE
He is 11 years old and weighs 26 pounds. He is a little guy that is looks to be about 4 or 5 years old as far as his height goes. His papa brought me his birth certificate to confirm his age. We also looked at his teeth and it appears that his age is correct. His speech and actions are more like an 11 year old as well. We are going to keep him for a few months and see if we can get him to grow and gain some weight. We will them proceed to see if his legs can be fixed. Saint Vique has 4 living siblings at home and one that has died from kwashiorkor. It is painful for him to walk. He is currently on the medika mamba program.
WILSON
He is 1 month old and weighs 8 pounds. His mother died shortly after he was born. His grandma brought him to the clinic. It took here over 12 hours total travel time to get to the clinic. Wilson’s dad has 2 other children to care for. He cannot care for Wilson and continue to provide for the other kids. He heard about our program and was happy to find a place to care for Wilson when he was a little baby. He can now concentrate on working, making enough to feed the kids and to begin to pay back the cost for the burial of Wilson’s mom.

August 1, 2012 at 2:31 pmEvery child tugs at my heart. I would foster each one in a heartbeat. I’m honored to be a part of the sponsorship program. I just wish there were a way to do more.
Thank you for sharing their stories.
