The Heartbeat of Hope: Your Help Sustains the Emergency Care Fund

Every day at our clinic in Haiti, we witness the incredible strength and resilience of our community. We encounter significant challenges, but the support from compassionate people like you truly makes a difference. The need for immediate and intensive medical care is constant, and in these particularly difficult times marked by insecurity, the demands have only grown.

Your contributions do more than just meet physical needs—they bring hope and relief to families during some of their most stressful and frightening moments. You help us extend our hand farther than we could alone. Every dollar you give is used to directly support these urgent needs, ensuring that our community not only survives but has the opportunity to heal despite the obstacles they face.

The Lifeline

In Haiti, immediate payment is often required for healthcare, a daunting barrier for many in urgent need. Our Emergency Fund is vital as it ensures no patient is turned away due to lack of funds. This fund is specifically for transferring patients to hospitals that can offer surgeries, complicated birth care, and treatments beyond our reach. It also covers critical transportation, testing, medications, and hospitalization costs.

Each contribution to this fund not only supports a critical need but also brings immense relief to worried families, offering them a glimmer of hope. This isn’t just about medical treatment—it’s about giving people a chance to heal and rebuild.

Accidental Fall

Jean Odes, a 14-year-old boy, is the latest person to receive aid with the Emergency Fund and shows the necessity and importance of your gifts. After a severe fall from a mango tree before school, Jean was left with multiple injuries, including a serious head trauma. The school director and a kind taxi driver put him on a motorcycle and drove him to a government hospital because that was the cheapest, closest option. The director sent someone to tell his parents and they got to the hospital around noon. They had gathered all the money they could find, but it was only enough to do the sutures. The doctor was asking for several different X-rays and medications, but their money was gone. His head injury was so severe that he was unconscious. The father remembered that we had helped him with a friend who had a head injury many years ago. With no more money and wanting to do anything to save their son, they put him on another motorcycle taxi and arrived at our clinic around 6pm on Thursday night. He was in bad shape. We suspected both legs and an arm were broken. He had a large laceration on his forehead/head and his left jaw. We knew more bones could be broken but had no way of knowing without X-rays. We decided to have him sleep at the clinic and try to get him to another hospital in the morning.

On Friday, he was refused at the hospital because his injuries were too severe. They couldn’t even get X-rays. There was a concern that he might die from the head injury. Precious resources in this current situation in Haiti must be used wisely. We brought him back to the clinic to watch him for the weekend to see if his neurologic condition would improve.

All glory be to God, the Great Physician, he did have some improvement and was talking some by Sunday night. We sent him in our truck to a hospital 4 1/2 – 5 hr drive away. Even then, they did not have the specialist needed to fully care for him. They did admit him yesterday and did Xrays. They are still discussing the best way to go about treating him. Complicated cases in these uncertain times need to have an efficient plan that the whole care team agrees upon. The number and location of his injuries are difficult to deal with by themself, but he is also anemic with a level of 6 g/dl. There is minimal blood for transfusion available in the country. Even though things are stacked against this boy, we want to invite you to join us in standing with his parents in faith and support to help Jean Odes. He is one of the best hospitals in Haiti and we are praying for miracles for this young boy.

Jean’s condition was critical, requiring specialized care and equipment unavailable at our local facilities. Through the Emergency Fund, we were able to transport him to a hospital capable of providing the necessary x-rays and specialist consultations, despite the long and rough 4.5 hour journey involved. As of the latest updates, he has shown signs of improvement, a miracle in itself given the dire circumstances. He has a long way to go to pull through this accident, but we know your prayers, donation, and support can give him and his family hope for recovery.
