Clinic Story-Shina

When 32-month-old Shina became seriously ill, her parents knew they needed help. Living in the rural community of Fond-Baptiste, where access to healthcare is limited, they had few options as they watched their only child grow weaker each day.

Shina developed severe swelling throughout her body from grade 3+ edema caused by kwashiorkor. She also suffered from a persistent cough, difficulty breathing, and dangerously low oxygen levels. Despite her mother’s best efforts to care for her at home, Shina’s condition continued to worsen.

Her parents first sought help at a nearby clinic, where the medical team quickly recognized how critically ill she was. They immediately referred Shina to our Nutrition Center for specialized treatment. Without delay, her mother made the journey, hoping her daughter could receive the care she desperately needed.

When Shina arrived, our medical staff completed a thorough evaluation and admitted her for intensive treatment. She immediately began receiving the specialized nutrition, medications, and close medical monitoring required to stabilize her condition.

For families living in remote areas of Haiti, reaching medical care is often one of the greatest challenges they face. Long distances, limited transportation, and financial hardship frequently delay treatment until a child is critically ill. Shina’s story reflects the reality faced by many parents who are doing everything they can to protect their children.

Because specialized care was available when Shina needed it most, she was given the opportunity to begin her journey toward recovery. Stories like hers remind us why access to quality healthcare and therapeutic nutrition is so important for children living in vulnerable communities.
