In the remote community, far from our clinic, lives James, a seven-year-old boy with his parents and two brothers. Like many families in this area, their daily life is shaped by long distances, limited healthcare services, and the constant struggle to access medical care when illness strikes.

James’s illness began with numerous painful sores appearing across his body. At first, his family hoped they would heal on their own. But in a community with few healthcare workers, almost no nearby medical facilities, and very limited transportation, seeking professional treatment is often beyond reach. With no immediate alternative, James’s mother prepared crushed medicinal leaves and applied them to his skin, relying on the traditional remedies available to her.

Instead of improving, James’s condition worsened. The sores spread across his face, the infection became more severe, and each passing day increased the risk to his health. Faced with no other option, his mother made the difficult decision to walk for nearly seven hours to reach our clinic, hoping they would arrive before his condition became even more dangerous.

After James arrived, our medical team performed laboratory tests and a full clinical evaluation. Based on the results, he began a seven-day course of ceftriaxone to treat the infection. Yet receiving treatment did not end the family’s hardship. Because the journey between his home and the clinic was too long to make every day, James’s mother had to stay at a friend’s home closer to the clinic throughout the treatment period.

James’s story is a reminder of how fragile health becomes when medical care is far away. For many families living in rural Haiti, illness is not only a medical challenge—it is also a struggle against distance, poverty, and the shortage of healthcare workers. Every hour spent walking instead of receiving treatment places another child’s life at greater risk.

James’s mother is grateful that, despite every obstacle, her son was finally able to receive care. Yet countless families continue to face the same reality, where access to healthcare still depends on how far a parent is able to walk in search of hope.
